Client Case Report
Abstract
This case study examines the effects of massage and cupping therapy over a six-week period on a 23-year-old woman experiencing chronic musculoskeletal pain, weakness, and headaches. Despite years of medical consultations, no specific diagnosis was established, and previous treatments focused primarily on mental health support rather than physical relief. The client, a grocery store worker with a sedentary lifestyle outside of work, sought massage and cupping therapy as an alternative approach to managing persistent pain and improving mobility.
The treatment plan incorporated Swedish massage, myofascial release, craniosacral techniques, and cupping therapy, targeting pain reduction, mobility improvement, and overall physical function. Initially, the client reported a pain level of 5/10, restricted range of motion in multiple joints, muscle tightness in areas such as the chest, deltoids, glutes, hamstrings, and trapezius, and specific limitations in the knees, arms, and elbows.
During therapy, craniosacral techniques were introduced first to help the client transition into a healing state, providing immediate relief from stress, neck pain, and emotional heaviness before deeper physical work. Over the course of six weeks, the client experienced gradual improvements, including enhanced knee mobility, increased flexibility in the arms and back, and a pain reduction to 3/10.
Cupping therapy played a crucial role in amplifying and prolonging relief by stimulating circulation and releasing deep-seated tension, ensuring sustained progress beyond each session. Additionally, while the client had challenges with independent stretching, the combination of techniques still led to meaningful and consistent improvement.
This case highlights the importance of balance, relaxation, and holistic healing, demonstrating how massage and cupping therapy work synergistically to support the body's natural ability to heal, restore mobility, and promote long-term wellness. It underscores the value of craniosacral therapy in creating a deep state of relaxation, allowing for better therapeutic outcomes, and reinforces how restorative care—when applied consistently—helps address persistent physical discomfort and improve overall health.
Case Report
Client Health History
The client is a 23-year-old woman who works in a grocery store, spending long hours standing, bending, and performing repetitive movements throughout the day. She leads a sedentary lifestyle outside of work, with minimal physical activity.
She has been experiencing persistent pain and discomfort since her teenage years, including joint pain, muscle tightness, weakness in the knees, and frequent headaches. Despite seeking medical guidance over the years, doctors have been unable to diagnose a specific condition or provide a clear treatment plan. Instead, recommendations have focused on mental health counseling as a potential avenue for relief.
The client is not currently taking any medications, has no history of medical supervision, and has not undergone any surgeries. However, prior to the third session, she sprained her ankle, adding an additional layer of discomfort to her condition.
This was her first experience with professional massage and cupping therapy, sought primarily for body pain relief, with a preference for medium pressure during sessions. Due to the long-standing nature of her symptoms and the lack of definitive medical solutions, she turned to massage and cupping therapy as an alternative approach to managing her pain and improving her overall well-being.
Subjective Findings
The client reports pain in the back, neck, chest, and joints, along with knee weakness and frequent headaches. The pain includes:
- Aches, restricted mobility, and soreness (varies throughout the day)
- Sensations of needles in affected areas
- Pain worsens with standing, bending, reaching, prolonged positions, and daily tasks
- Relief occurs with massage, ice, heat, sitting, or lying on her chest or side
- Three days before therapy, the frequency of pain episodes increased, but intensity decreased.
Objective Assessment
The client appeared tired and weak, seeking relief for ongoing discomfort. No postural imbalances or gait abnormalities were observed.
Initial Pain Level:
- 5/10 Overall Pain
Range of Motion Restrictions:
- Left Knee: Limited extension
- Arms: Restricted abduction/adduction
- Elbows: Limited extension
- Brachialis: Mild pain
Muscle Tightness Present in:
- Chest
- Deltoids
- Glutes
- Hamstrings
- Quads
- Adductors
- Gastrocnemius
- Trapezius (Upper and middle)
- Levator Scapulae
Treatment Plan
The therapy sessions spanned six weeks, aiming to reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall well-being.
Approach:
- Swedish massage, myofascial release, craniosacral techniques, and cupping therapy to release tension and stagnation.
- Stretching techniques provided for pain relief and stress management.
Results & Client Response
Treatment began with craniosacral techniques, targeting stress and neck pain. This initial technique helped reduce heaviness and discomfort, bringing a sense of relaxation before deeper physical work. The client experienced immediate relief, reporting less stress, fewer aches, and a reduction in neck and back pain.
Over the course of six weeks, therapy led to gradual progress, with noticeable reductions in pain intensity and frequency, improved knee mobility, and greater flexibility in arms and back. The client now reports a pain level of 3 out of 10, down from the initial 5 out of 10, demonstrating meaningful and consistent improvement.
Cupping therapy significantly enhanced the effectiveness and longevity of the relief, ensuring sustained progress beyond each session. By stimulating circulation and releasing deep-seated tension, cupping provided deeper pain relief and prolonged the benefits, supporting the lasting effects of massage therapy.
Swedish massage techniques contributed to relaxation, stress relief, and improved circulation, helping to enhance overall comfort and ease muscle tension. Myofascial release played a vital role in reducing restrictions in connective tissue, promoting greater mobility and flexibility while alleviating chronic pain.
Although the client wasn’t always able to follow through with independent stretching, improvements remained steady and impactful, reinforcing the effectiveness of the combined therapeutic approach
Conclusion, Lessons Learned and Reflections
This case reinforced the importance of balance, relaxation, and holistic healing. Our bodies endure constant strain, yet rarely receive the restorative care needed. Craniosacral techniques, proved invaluable in helping the body transition into a healing state.
Additionally, cupping therapy enhanced the effectiveness and longevity of the benefits achieved through massage. By stimulating circulation and releasing deep-seated tension, cupping amplified pain relief, prolonging the healing process, and ensured that the progress made in each session was sustained over time. It worked as a powerful complement to massage therapy, helping the body retain improvements and fostering greater mobility, relaxation, and recovery.
Massage and cupping together serve as a dynamic duo, reinforcing the body’s ability to heal naturally. This experience highlighted just how essential these therapeutic practices are—not only for relief but for lasting, meaningful wellness.
