Key Hadith Regarding the Body as a Trust (Amanah)
أمانة Amānah (a trust, something entrusted to your care)
These hadith reminds us that our bodies are entrusted to us by Allah, and caring for them with intention and respect is part of honoring that trust.
-
Rights of the Body
The Prophet (ﷺ) stated: "Your body has a right over you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5199) This implies that over-exerting oneself in worship or work at the expense of health is contrary to the Sunnah.
-
Accountability for the Body
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "Man's feet will not move on the Day of Resurrection before he is asked about his life, how did he consume it; his knowledge, what did he do with it; his wealth, how did he earn it and how did he dispose of it; and about his body, how did he wear it out" (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2417)
-
Stewardship
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Every one of you is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock" (Sahih al-Bukhari 7138). This covers the responsibility to care for one's physical and mental well-being.
